From experience, I think most employment agencies are a waste of space. I often wonder just what they do during their working day!! Registered with umpteen and applied for several vacancies yet heard nothing at all. Got a questionaire from one of them though!

i agree. most of them are a waste of time. if you can, avoid them completely. i would say that about 5% are true professional. the other 50% are incompetent and the rest are lazy.

How about this for an infuriating agency clerk?
These recruitment agencies are a dime a dozen; there seem to be as many agencies as there are vacancies. Remember they need you more than you need them so don't put up with any nonsense. I treat them all like estate agents; i.e. unqualified, commission driven cowboys. They'll try and put you in unsuitable work if you let them, be firm and if they don't let up or if they hassle you in your current job; agree to an interview but don't turn up - make them look poor and that'll hurt them; then you go to one of the other several thousand agencies anyway - LET THEM KNOW WHOS BOSS!
This morning, I received a phone call from a girl whose employment agency had received my online CV for a job I'd applied for on the Internet. After taking some details down, she promised she would ring me back "within the next ten minutes" once she had sorted out an interview for me.
Well, I waited, and waited ... But no call at all. Concerned about her failure to ring me back, I rang up the agency concerned, only to be told by one of her colleagues that she was "on the other line" at the moment, and that she would DEFINITELY call me back some time that day.
Well, I waited, and waited again . . and, needless to say, she STILL failed to ring me back. You can imagine how furious I am now feeling!
Just why the hell are these sort of agencies allowed to stay in business for, if they treat jobhunters so shabbily and disgustingly as this? Do they get some sort of perverse kick out of building people's hopes up like this, only to shatter them into a thousand smithereens.
Why the hell did this woman promise she would "ring me back" if she had no intention of doing so? And just why the hell did she bother to even contact me for in the first place?
I am sure many other people have had similar experiences of these agencies, and would all agree that to treat us depressed jobhunters like this is just utterly unacceptable and downright despicable!

I agree I try to avoid agencies if possible, they use all sorts of tricks to get you to register, in my case i enquired about a job in my home town and was told yes its perfect for you come and register then we can tell you who it's for, when I got there and AFTER the one hour registration, the post was for a town miles from me.
One time they rang and said please do a promotion at a supermarket, something I had never done before, but they said you won't be on your own and its an easy four hour job. When I got there I was totally on my own, nobody was expecting me there and I felt really embarrased. I stuck it out as if I had walked out I would have been out of pocket with the cost of travelling there.
Never trust them it's as simple as that.

I am sure many other people have had similar experiences of these agencies, and would all agree that to treat us depressed jobhunters like this is just utterly unacceptable and downright despicable!

You've just learned the first rule of dealing with recruitment agents: DON'T BELEIVE A WORD THEY SAY.
If they say they've got a perfect job for you - they're lying. If they say they'll ring you back - they're lying. They make their business out of keeping jobhunters dangling on a thread of hope. They ONLY get back to you with good news. Chances are, if they havent got back to you regarding an interview, it is bad news. They are too cowardly to come out and say it straight. They just ignore you and hope you will go away.
This type of behaviour is typical of them. I registered with dozens of agencies during the last couple of years. All of them got me to register, on the promise of supposed jobs which I saw advertised online. Like with you, they promised to get back to me, but never did.
In all that time I only got 2 interviews, neither of which were for jobs that were appropriate for me.
Now, finnally, I have got myself a job WITHOUT the help of an agency. In fact I got much better results just checking the local press for jobs and applying directly to those jobs. The agencies are just a waste of space. Don't bother with them. Use word-of-mouth, newspaper ads, websites of local employers, ANYTHING you can think of besides agencies. The agencies are worse than useless.
