Recruitment Agencies

I Hate Recruitment Agencies

I have had such awful experiences with recruitment agencies. They are so nice when they call me up and ask to put my CV forward for certain jobs, but sometimes the roles are not right for me. When I try to explain this to them, they instantly become rude and impatient. One agency called me today, and agrresively told me that he was putting me forward for a role, but when I asked him to read the job description he became very vague.. naturally I aksed more questions and he suddenly became very irritated.

I hate them so much, on several occassions they have sent me forward for roles that I did not give them permission to , and then when I got invited to attend an interview ... they pressure me into going to it, even if the role is of no interest to me.

I have caught them out so many time, they are constantly pulling tricks and they have NO respect for the candidates for the role, they only care about their client (the employer) and their stupid targets... they will acheive them at any cost

They are all after their commision and I do not trust any of them anymore..... I am talking from experience, I have only developed this attitude in the last 2 months. No, its not, very much the opposite. The agency in question may not be performing to your standard but if you believe that their service is due to an individual then raise it with a manager. If you believe most agencies act the same way then consider your own approach.

There is a special way to deal with agencies and once you're "in the club" of that agency then you will be treated like a gold mine and you and the agency will win. Unfortunately, this approach is not to everyone's taste to be treated as a commodity. The fact is that your 'partnership' with the agencies (agent(s)) will develop over time.

During my temp/contracting days I worked with about 25 agencies. Yes, it was a job just to be intouch on a regular basis but had a good relationship with 3 to earn consistant work and high money. I earned considerable more than full time colleagues even when I was supposed to be a full time student.

Agencies shouldn't have 'clubs' should they? I thought the whole point of recruiting was to forward the most appropriate candidates to their clients, not just forward the same set of people, irrespective of suitability.

I agree with the first poster, agencies very often treat candidates like dirt, which is odd considering they totally rely on them to further the credibility of their own individual businesses by keeping their details on databanks. If flexible workers are commodities (as they are treated) then the equivalent analogy I could make, if temps were inanimate objects, is for a supermarket to treat any incoming stock they intend to sell to customers in such poor condition it is virtually unsaleable or doesn't make the HSE standards.

Sorry Suze, but I disagree.

Yes they should have clubs. The Meaning of a club; 'A group of people organized for a common purpose'. That purpose is to find work and to promote their skills. the agency is the link between the group and the employer. The goal, which most Agencies offer, is to continously better ones chance to find work and this can be acheived by communicating with fellow temps/contractors. If people can not see the advantage then stay at home, alone.

Success is usually found near successful people, so my advice is to stay close, watch and learn.

Secondly, its a very wide statement about the treatment of the few agencies. We all like to hate Estate agents but they do achieve their objectives and we all keep going back to them.

Agenies don't give a rat's a$$ about their candidates, they are all after their greasy commission and all treat their candidates with disdain. They will sell you a$$ to Mongolian slave traders if they have the chance, and hunt down your work number, call your boss and tell him you are looking elsewhere (yes, this has actually happened). They are - like estate agents - a necessary evil.

...Don't we all?

I totally agree with these sentiments. My 3 biggest problems with these people have always been:

1. They INSIST on dealing by phone, never e-mail (which is far more discreet and convenient if you are stuck in the office all day).

2. They NEVER get back to you when they say they will. They put you forward for a job, days go by, weeks go by, you hear nothing. You have to chase and beg for information just to find out what happened to your application. (A simple "sorry but they dont want you" would be fine).

3. In the case of I.T. jobs, they often don't have a CLUE what they are talking about - they just read the job spec over the phone and clearly dont know what any of it means, it's like they are reading a script, which makes it very hard to discuss your suitability with them.

It is worth doing all you can to seek out your new job WITHOUT agency help:

(a) Check local press jobs listing every week (b) Use word-of-mouth (ask friends/collegues if they've heard of any jobs elsewhere) (c) Check the websites of interesting companies - many have 'employment' pages). (d) Send speculative CV/applications to companies you might like to work for. (always worth a shot).

That said, agencies have unfortunately become, as someone else said, a "necessary evil"... You may find that you don't get anywhere fast without them.

1. They INSIST on dealing by phone, never e-mail (which is far more discreet and convenient if you are stuck in the office all day).

The reason, I suspect, that they deal by phone is if they are telling lies or carrying out some other dirty deed that sits outside of the regulations, then they can simply claim that they never said the things they are later accused of if a complaint is put in writing.

I always insist that agencies back up all critical negotiations in writing - from sending CV to hirer, to role no longer live etc.

Same goes for hirers. I found that many do not put praise of candidates performance in writing or e-mail. At one time I used to get plenty of e-mail comments on the good quality of my work, but in recent years, any praise has all been word of mouth with nothing substantial in writing. Again, I suspect that is a policy safeguard in case they want to shaft a candidate later on by claiming underperformance if they want to terminate without penalty.

I Hate Recruitment Agencies

I absolutely hate recruitment agencies with all my being - they truly are scum.

I don't understand how they can make any money they way they treat people who apply for jobs. Admittedly you're not paying for a service, but does that mean that human decency goes out the window?!

A major criticism is their supersiliousness and pomposity, the stupid language that they use supposedly in order to try and sound "professional", instead of actually behaving professionally. Let's be honest though, who'd ever apply for a job to be one? Only someone with few options and a love of petty power; and one who enjoys spending most of the day chatting, drinking coffee and, bleating off those repetitive letters, e-mails and phone calls. They're also generally quite ignorant about pretty much all the jobs they advertise, perhaps because few of them are especially academic (degree or not). Then there's that intensely stupid and infuriating question they all ask: "What do you want to do in the future?" Like most of their questions, it seems to be designed to trip you up. Well the fact is, few of us really know what we want to do in the future, most of us go to recruitment agencies for a job, not careers advice. I go to a recruitment agency because I know what I want, I want a job, anything within certain range of criteria will do, gimme the menu, I'll choose my dish - but no, these waiters (rather like in some kind of Monty Python sketch) want you to guess what's on the menu - some specific job title, to which they can reply "sorry, monsieur, ze data entry clerk pozision iz off," I think going into a recruitment consultants is the best way of understanding what it's like to not be white, if you are. I had that one recently AGAIN that stupid question "what do you want to do in the future"! I just snapped, and ranted down the phone to moron, "I want a phucking job you phucking fool, not a phucking barrage of stupid phucking questions, you phucking retard." Naturally I was invited to seek the advice of another recruitment agency; but it illustrates the point that these companies actually GET IN THE WAY OF HELPING PEOPLE GET JOBS, they are the epitome of surplus middle-(wo)men office trash. They exist in their own vapid bubble, and in order to access the jobs you have to humour them as though they were old dears in a special home, indulging them in "playing office" with their silly generic computer test software and hopeless yet repetitive interviewing technique, and inane dated officebabble. Practically every single one of them is a David Brent-cum-Alan Partridge in female form, and their ubiquitousness disgusts and dismays me. I actually want to choose the job I want to apply for, not have some plump phuckwit in an office chair choose it for me based on their own agenda.

So why do companies keep using them? It must be because they're cheap (in every sense) - well if you pay peanuts, you will get monkeys. Perhaps globalisations is making most UK companies that little bit tighter than they should be.

The only way to fight the tyranny of "Recruitment Consultants" (as well as Estate Agents and their brethren) is to boycott them. Don't use them, apply to companies direct, cut out the middle man, pretend they don't exist, and before long, they won't... let the revolution begin!

Don't use them, apply to companies direct, cut out the middle man, pretend they don't exist, and before long, they won't... let the revolution begin! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One thing I've started doing is turning the recruitment model on it's head....and it's began to pay off.

Let me explain:

Take the facts. Recruitment agencies are not 'agencies' at all, they are 'employment businesses.' Under the legislation the definition of an EB is 'an organisation that sources candidates for hirers.' It does not say that they are in business 'to find us work.' That's an important distinction to make because it implies that contractors are doing EBs and hirers are service by making themselves available for hire. Therefore, I want some return on my investment. This is what I'm now doing, and I suggest as many contractors do the same....

I work as a self managed business through a limited company set up (via an umbrella). Therefore, to escape IR35 legislation, I also negotiate hard with EBs even at the pre-hire stage and act as though I am my own business by setting the tone for my own terms and conditions, I do not act like a passive psudo temp employee or work-seeker. For example, I now insist that every stage of the application stage is backed up in writing (via e-mail) and do not accept telephone reassurances. I also make it clear that when interviews are set up the hirer or agent pays for my travel expenses, not me (although it wise to say that once it's been set up, not before when recruiters can refuse to represent you in the first place. By doing it after the interview is set up the EB recruiter risks losing a sale and it may be too late for them to send across another CV. It makes sense for hirers or recruiters to pay too. After all, true to the EB defninition above, the hirer can ask the EB to send more CVs across, increasing competition at interview stage (of course I don't want that) and the hirers also source candidates internally whilst still scouting for external contractors. Therefore, why on earth should I pay to travel to see them? Like any other business, I need to assess the risks before I shell out money. That's how all businesses are run. The definition I have described above about what an EB is makes it abundantly clear that we, as contractors, are doing the EB and hirer a favour by making ourselves available to them, they are not doing us a favour at all. Therefore, they should pay. I am also inclined to suggest that EBs pay to keep my CV on their database too. All the time EBs keep a stock of CVs, they are able to use these to boost the credibility of their own industry and EB with potential new clients with no obvious immediate returns for me. I don't stay in business to boost the EBs, they are in business to serve their hirers and to throw business opportunities my way. With no payment for CVs on database I only ever apply for specific roles and insist my CV is removed when they are finished with processing for that particular vacancy. Another reason I don't leave my CV is because EBs don't just source available database CVs exclusively when roles materialise, they still go outside to job boards to attract more candidates too. Again, where is the return for me? If I put my CV out at all, it will be on Google or a location of my own choice that doens't allow it to be exploited by recruiters free of charge to service their own industry.

At the moment, contractors tend to rely on opting out to look business like. All that does is weaken contractors 'rights whilst still being screwed for tax like an employee (the IR35 liability is not connected to opting in or out, it just depends on your working conditions). Now, B2B negotiations, backed up in writing, and opting in - to protect my own interests - is far better than doing what contractors currently do - allow EBs to dictate terms and conditions by blanket policies at pre-hire stage and signing contractors without negotiation and then opting out with an IR35 friendly agreement in place. All that amounts to is contractors getting the worst of both worlds.

For temps the situation is slightly different because they are actually employed by the recruitment business and they also source work with no competition element generated. Nevertheless, they still treat temps like dirt and basically expect them to stay on assignment for however long it suits them not the temp, irrespective of how accurate the temp assignment description was in the first place or how well they are basically being treated on site. This is all wrong - it should be the other way round. Temps are meant to be able to come and go as they please with impunity from hirer or EB. This rarely happens in my past experience. I remember the days when temp recruiters used to speak down to me like I was a kid: 'would you do this assignment [usually some crap filing number] for me poppet, there is no one else I can ask at the moment?' Otherwise, it was 'yes I know you want to leave on Friday, but can you make sure you stick it out until I find a replacement for you.' More often then not, they didn't bother so you felt coerced into staying a week longer than you really wanted.

3. In the case of I.T. jobs, they often don't have a CLUE what they are talking about - they just read the job spec over the phone and clearly dont know what any of it means, it's like they are reading a script, which makes it very hard to discuss your suitability with them.

Taken from website UKRecruit (forum)

"I currently work in IT recruitment and I am thinking about changing sectors. Its not that I do not like my job it's great. My problem is I find it hard to grasp the IT market seeing as there are so many technologies out there."

Pretty much sums up what you said, Owen.

Recruitment is one of the few industries where knowledge of your market sector is not seen as a disadvantage. It's just easy money for old rope. The sooner this industry is ditched - at least in it's present and irrelevent 'sales orientated model' the better.

Okay here goes, I am a Recruitment Consultant and I agree with absolutely EVERYTHING I've read on this board.

Not a day goes by when I don't regret taking this "JOB". I F**ING HATE IT!!

I can understand why you all hate recruitment agencies/consultants so much, the truth is that for the most part you are just a walking pound sign (not a term I like, one that is bashed into your head from day one) if you are placeable and affable welcome to the clique, if not you just become an interruption, a raised eyebrow, an "I'm not in, take their number". I'll probably be hung drawn and quartered after posting this, but this isn't the first agency I've worked for, I've been at a few and none of them are any different, they all claim to be, and you might even get a consultant come on here and tell you that not all recruitment consultants are like this.......but the truth is this industry is truly f**king awful. Not a surprise to many of you out there. Some of us fell into this profession by accident, not by desire, some of us got stuck on the rec CON merry go round, try getting a job doing anything else once you've been in recruitment (this isn't a cry for pity). Well here's to the death of the recruitment agency, nothing would make me happier, from next payday there's one less supposed consultant for you lot to worry about.
